We are looking for a compassionate, motivated, and skilled Care Officerto join our Learning Disabilities Respite Service in Exeter. This is an exciting opportunity to combine hands-on support with team leadership, helping adults with learning disabilities, physical disabilities, and complex needs to live fulfilling lives in a safe, person-centred environment.
As a Care Officer, you will supervise and support a team of Care Assistants while ensuring the highest standards of care are delivered in line with individual support plans, safeguarding requirements, and Care Quality Commission (CQC) standards.
About the Role
You will play a key role in the day-to-day running of the service, ensuring service users receive high-quality, personalised support while promoting independence, dignity, and choice. Working alongside the Registered Manager and Assistant Manager, you will provide leadership and guidance to staff and help maintain excellent outcomes for the people we support.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise a team of Care Assistants on shift.
- Ensure care is delivered in accordance with individual support plans and assessed needs.
- Support and monitor the safe administration of medication.
- Conduct staff supervision, appraisals, and day-to-day performance management.
- Assist with admissions, discharges, and service user reviews.
- Contribute to support plans, risk assessments, moving and handling plans, and care documentation.
- Promote safeguarding and wellbeing for vulnerable adults.
- Liaise effectively with families, healthcare professionals, social workers, and partner agencies.
- Support recruitment, induction, and training of new staff.
- Help maintain compliance with CQC standards, health and safety requirements, and local policies.
- Oversee the running of the service in the absence of the Regitered Manager or Assistant Manager
About You
We are looking for someone who has:
- Experience in a supervisory role within a social care setting.
- Experience supporting adults with learning disabilities, physical disabilities, or complex needs.
- Experience leading, motivating, and coordinating a team.
- Good communication and record-keeping skills.
- Ability to work confidently in challenging situations and manage conflict positively.
- Good IT skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Teams and Outlook.
- Level 2 qualification in Health and Social Care (or equivalent).
- Ability to communicate confidently and fluently in English for all aspects of the role.
Knowledge of:
- CQC standards
- Safeguarding adults
- Health and Social Care legislation
- Health and Safety requirements
- Safe medication practices
Desirable
- Diploma/NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care (or equivalent).
- Medication administration training.
- Moving and Handling training.
- Experience developing and supervising staff.
- Understanding of communication and behavioural support needs for individuals with learning disabilities.

- 2 Week shift rota including weekend working that attracts enhancements
